Invasion of the Body-Snatchers 1978 is more of a requel than a remake or reboot of the 1956 version. Itā€™s set in the same continuity with some very direct connections between the two films.

Two words from the TRPG community Iā€™ll be happy if I never hear again are ā€œelfgamesā€ and ā€œbadwrongfunā€, both used to shut down all critique or discussion of TRPG as an artform.

Badwrongfun was especially twisted since it was never a word someone themselves used, it was only ever used to strawdoll what other people were saying, like:

ā€” ā€œOh, Iā€™ve been thinking of a way that the game could be better for our groupā€

ā€” ā€œSTFU, donā€™t tell me our way is badwrongfun!ā€

ā€” ā€œI was onlā€“ā€

ā€” ā€œHey look over here everybody, weā€™ve got the badwrongfunpolice! Someone is taking their elfgames a little too seriouslyā€

All horses are fish. Seahorses and Appaloosas are more closely related biologically to each other than to sharks or to squid. I wanna create an alt on here that only posts about what animals are fish or not. Canaries and cobras are also fish. Bunnies are fish. I am a fish I am a fish I am a fish and I need water. Cladistics is a hell of a drug. Vultures are actually fish. However, vultures are a kind of fish called ā€œreptilesā€ which bunnies most certainly are not. Just imagine being a liā€™l sparrow fish flying through the air. Cats and mice? Both fish. Chanterelle? Not so much. Chanterelles, clams, and crabs are unfortunately not fish. Not even bees are fish.

One thing that sucks about many ACW alt-history books like the ā€œTimeline-191ā€ series and this book (ā€œBring the Jubileeā€) is the whole lost-causeā€“smelling ā€œoh the south wouldā€™ve totally emancipated three seconds after they had wonā€ wishful thinking. Thatā€™s one of the reasons why Willmottā€™s ā€œC.S.A.ā€ is so vital and such a gutpunch. It doesnā€™t sugarcoat the tyranny that the Richmond regime was built on.

Meow-mode looks like a fun modal editor for Emacs. Thereā€™s also a comparison at the bottom to other options (notably devil-mode is missing). I use god-mode but Iā€™ve hacked it up and souped it up so much beyond what was the default.

Here is Pauline Kael again:

It is like the old nonsense that man is what differentiates him from the other animals - which is usually said to be his soul or his mind or his ability to transmit information from one generation to another, etc. But man is also what he shares with the other animals. And if you try to reduce him to some supposed quality that he alone has, you get an absurdly distorted view of man. And the truth is, as we learn more about animals and about man, the less we are sure about what differentiates him from other animals, or if itā€™s so very important.

Dammit! I thought Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night was a liā€™l too easy so I thought Iā€™d start over at Hard, and I wanted to wait a bit so I wouldnā€™t be too bored seeing stuff I remembered too well, and the weeks turned into years how quick they pass and all the stars that never were are anyway it turns out I canā€™t select Hard, itā€™s disabled, implying that you need to have played it through on Normal first šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

Donā€™t worry, I searched up another way to unlock it. Naming a new game save file NIGHTMARE. A chime rang out and then I could start another new save game file named Sandra where I could start over on Hard mode. You canā€™t change difficulties mid-campaign. I still went with Miriam as the character. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

Also during my hiatus from the game I started playing Deedlit in the Wonder Labyrinth, maybe I should finish that first because thatā€™s one of the most charming Metroidvanias of all time.

I love this kinda calendar stuff. I usually just put appointments on the left (and some post-hoc ā€œdear diaryā€-type stuff if something unusual happens) and context lists on the right but itā€™s fun to see some other ways to do it.

Itā€™s so bonkers that this needs to be done per hook, that I canā€™t have a folder of global hooks in addition to any local hooks. (The problem Iā€™m really trying to solve is to have a global pre-commit check that thereā€™s no merge conflict, i.e. that the diff is quiet.)

A listener wrote in to Pauline Kaelā€™s radio show (on KPFA) near the end of 1961 asking why her opinion on movies were inversely correlated to their popularity. She replied:

I try to direct you to films that, if you search them out, will give you something[ā€¦]. I try not to waste air time discussing obviously bad moviesā€”popular though they may be; and I donā€™t discuss unpopular bad movies because youā€™re not going to see them anyway; and there wouldnā€™t be much point or sport in hitting people who are already down. I do think itā€™s important to take time on movies which are inflated by critical acclaim and which some of you might assume to be the film to see.

Iā€™m so glad I learned (a few years back) that git commits are versions* of files, not diffs or changesets. The first version control system I used** was darcs, but I never ever wanna go back to a ā€œtheory of patchesā€ā€“style system like that or pijul. Iā€™m much happier with the way git works. YMMV of course and I donā€™t wanna rain on anyone elseā€™s parade. Itā€™s just such a headache-reducer, working the git way.

Yes, I know the best way for contributors to work on my stuff is to send me patchesā€  but thatā€™s still awesome because I have an email plugin that turns those patches into git branches so I can work on ā€˜em with magit.

ā€ : pull requests are also OK! Not on GH obviously but to plain accessible repos.

Just the increase alone in the amount alloted to Swedish military is much higher than the total for climate.

The military spending increased by 27 billion* SEK (an increase of 28%) while the environmental spending (including non-climate stuff, like clean water) was cut to under 20 billion SEK (planned to be cut to 16 billion in 2025).

Also, those 16 billions are pretty undercut by all the billions spent on subsidizing the fossil industry, for example 6Ā½ billions spent to subsidize gasolene prices.

I guess they wanna have the most guns and cars on the cinder.
