Gemini mention, an update to the RFC (final, at least for now)

Posted on 2023-01-09

Last post regarding gemini mention for a while (probably another year if like last time :p), but after reading constructive comments and remarks via gemlog responses, emails or the fediverse, I had a final thought about what /I/ want to implement on /my/ capsule at this stage. I'll let it run for the 2023 year and revisit.

TLDR; changes

In short, the changes are:

So basically the gemini mention is reduced to the minimal: Submit a link that must link a "valid" link to your capsule.

It is the responsibility to the owner to decide where to submit links, which links are accepted (and describe it on their gemini mention page) and do whatever with the mention (email notification or whatever).

Why?

As said in my previous post, I agree that the "RE:" thing was too much of a constraint for very small gain (if any), so I simply removed that requirement.

Regarding the /.well-known path, the different remarks about saying the /.well-known should be either for the domain root or nothing makes sense. That's the idea behind the /.well-known directory anyway. And as Sean said via email, it is impossible to 100% accurately defined the root url of a capsule. So if we can't define the root, it probably means there is no easy way to imposing a defined path without adding a high level of complexity.

So maybe the reasonable solution is not to force path. That means probably no way to automate sending gemini mention, but is that a real problem? The more I think about it, the less I think it is… So in the end, I'm happy to remove yet another complexity.

I've updated the RFC[1], it is now a very light and simple one :).

Changes to this capsule

Now I have only one link at the bottom of each pages that goes to a /gemini-mention page that explain the concept and indicates authorized links to be mentioned. And of course, on that page, a link that open an input to submit the URL.

On this capsule, at this stage at least, any links can be mentioned. This might be revisited later.

Conclusion

Now that I made my mind based on the different comments, I want to "forget" about it. It is in place on this capsule, and feel free to submit any responses through it. If you prefer interacting with me via email or the fediverse, that's great too. If your capsule is indexed by Antenna/Cosmos, there is a very high chance that I will saw your post anyway :).

For those against it, it is as mandatory as putting your email address to be contacted, meaning it isn't :). Most geminauts will ignore it anyway, and that's fine :]. For example, I don't like the idea of comments on gemini (for many reasons, and I don't like them on the web either), then I just ignore comment system on capsules and don't implement it on mine. Easy :).
