The best thing about The United States of America is its community college system. For a nominal fee, anybody, at any point in their adult life, can decide to change careers and their overall direction in life by enrolling in a totally new field. Most of the tuition fees are so low, they can be paid for in cash by students, unlike their four-year university counterparts which may sink one tens of thousands of dollars in debt.
A lot of countries don't have systems like this. In some east Asian countries, your entire childhood is focused on taking one test and you are judged by your success (or lack thereof) for the rest of your life. How awful is that? Think of how undisciplined, brain dead, or aloof you were at age eighteen. What a short-sighted way to prepare somebody for a productive, healthy, and prosperous future. In Germany, for example, one gets placed on certain "tracks" in secondary school and students-turned-professionals generally stay within their lanes. I couldn't imagine my adult career being so heavily influenced by whatever the Hell I was doing in my teenage years.
Today, an American can decide to be a dental hygienist, for example, enroll in a dental hygienist program at the local community college, and get a fresh lease on life with a decent paycheque. Community colleges are an often overlooked opportunity to not only reinvent oneself, but to also learn real skills that are in demand. I can't recommend this approach, and opportunity, enough.
