*How to remove the PM9600SA case and install a new
EPROM or change Power-Up option
[WS 0.25 in]
[WS 0.25 in]
- The Process is an Easy One...
To install a new firmware revision EPROM chip or change the Power-Up option
jumper is very easy. It only requires removing one of the plastic side panels.
You do not need to completely disassemble the case.
To remove the three screws holding the side panel, you will need a
Phillips-head screw driver. If you are changing the EPROM chip, you will also
need a small flat-blade screw driver or a chip removal tool.
PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT
Before removing the case from the modem, be sure to turn the modem power off
and disconnect the power cable from the back of the modem. One should never
attach or disconnect signal cables from a device which is under power.
You will need to lay the modem on its side to remove the retaining screws. To
avoid scratching the other side of the case, it is suggested that you place a
soft towel under the modem as you work.
If you are going to change the firmware chip, you should be very careful to
avoid damaging the new chip with static electricity. Leave the new chip in the
anti-static foam until you are ready to install it in your modem.
REMOVE THE CASE SIDE PANEL
With the modem lying on its side, the front panel should be to your right and
the RS232 connector to your left. Remove the three screws indicated in the
illustration (overleaf) at positions A, B, and C.
With the screws removed, lift on the lower left corner of the plastic side and
once clear of the chassis, swing the left corner toward your body. The side
panel will come away from the modem chassis and the case top and front panels.
This will leave both the EPROM and the W1 header exposed on the printed circuit
board as shown in the insets of the illustration.
REASSEMBLING THE MODEM CASE
When you have installed the new EPROM chip or altered the position of the Berg
jumper on the W1 header, you must reassemble the modem case. The procedure is
just the opposite used to remove the plastic side panel.
Fit the lower right corner of the side panel behind the front panel and engage
the interlocking tongue and groove of the side and top panels at the extreme
right edge. Press down slightly on the side panel and swing it into position,
feeding the tongue of the side panel into the groove of the top panel. With the
side panel back in place on the chassis, install the three screws removed
during disassembly.

Power-Up Option Header:
On header W1, the factory default
jumper position is across pins two
and four. For BBS or other
unattended operation, place the
Berg jumper across pins one and
three.
In the latter position, when AC
power is removed and subsequently
restored, the modem will be ON if
the modem was ON when AC power was
removed.
Firmware Chip Replacement:
When replacing an EPROM, be sure
that all the pins are seated
squarely in the socket before
pressing the new chip completely
down. Check that no pins are bent
under and that the notch in the
chip body is pointing in the
direction shown in the
illustration.
Leave the new chip in the
protective foam until you are
ready to install it.
When removing the old chip with a
screwdriver, gently pry the chip
up a small amount at each end,
alternating from end to end until
the chip is completely removed
from the socket.
Recycle and Protect the Environment:
Practical Peripherals would like to recycle the old EPROM chip and the
packaging materials. Please insert the old chip in the anti-static foam and
place it in the original packaging. Please use the attached label to send this
back to:
