Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Graphics Question Subj: ANSI Graphics 91-04-27 21:44:22 EDT From: Psycosis Posted on: America Online Is there ANY way for a IIgs to emulate ANSI graphics? I've got Proterm, but I can't figure out how. Is it possible? Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Graphics Question Subj: sure... 91-04-27 21:57:11 EDT From: JeffdeSac Posted on: America Online ProTERM will not display ANSI graphics in any way, shape, or form. There are a few programs out there, though. Look around for AGATE. It's not //gs specific, but it will display ANSI. I'm not sure if there are any programs that are specifically made for the gs that display ANSI, though. Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Graphics Question Subj: ANSI 91-04-28 12:48:10 EDT From: LL AndyW Posted on: America Online Download SnowTerm. It should be in the terminal program area here. It supports ANSI and graphics.. Andy.. Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Graphics Question Subj: Snowterm, etcetera 91-04-28 18:06:55 EDT From: Psycosis Posted on: America Online I tried Snowterm - but I can't get it to display ANSI. The board asks me if I can support ANSI graphics, I say yes, and I get garbage. I've tried in all three emulation modes. Can anyone help? Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Graphics Question Subj: Ansi graphics on a II 91-04-28 19:39:42 EDT From: AFL DannyH Posted on: America Online Pschosis, the Apple II computers including the GS do NOT have the ability to support true ANSI. This is a hardware limitation not a software one. SnowTerm and Agate will get you as close as any application on the market. But, neither will give you ANSI graphics display. 16 background and 16 foreground with 132 column display is just out of the reach of the Apple II's. dannyhaynes Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Graphics Question Subj: ANSI...again. 91-04-29 18:14:01 EDT From: AFC GaryG Posted on: America Online There is NO program that does ANSI on the Apple II, and a full implementation would be very hard. (read virtually impossible) SnowTerm, Agate...these are basically VT-100 emulations, NOT ANSI. You can get colors with SnowTerm, and with both Agate & SnowTerm, you get the VT-100 screen tricks, but real ANSI? No. Sorry. Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Graphics Question Subj: AGATE... 91-05-02 18:13:04 EDT From: AFA JoeyS Posted on: America Online I've been playing with AGATE 069 (is that supposed to be 0.69?), and it's really quite nice, actually. Handled all the graphic characters and screen controls peachily, and the Zmodem, miracle of miracles, actually works. Very impressive: worth downloading and playing with. :) Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Graphics Question Subj: AGate 91-05-02 22:49:37 EDT From: QuickTrack Posted on: America Online AGate is nice. Good program. Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Graphics Question Subj: SnowTerm, Agate 91-05-04 19:14:11 EDT From: MUS1 Posted on: America Online SnowTerm just does screen controls, it doesn't display graphics characters, Agate does both, each have their own good points... But neither, nor anything else, could be 100% "ANSI"... Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Graphics Question Subj: Agate 91-05-05 21:33:23 EDT From: AFL DannyH Posted on: America Online I feel the unzip utility in AGATE makes it worth the download. Now all the zipped files here in the PC Forums on America Online as well as all the local BBS' are readily available to Apple II users. dannyhaynes Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Graphics Question Subj: Agate and ZIP 91-05-06 04:27:16 EDT From: LL AndyW Posted on: America Online I downloaded a file from here, just to look at the docs in it (a PC program), and found that out of about 8 entries, Agate would only unpack 2 of them. It looks like if the Reduce method 4 which seems to be rather common is not supported... Looks like I'll have to keep UNZIP 2.0 so I can get everything. Of course if I didn't have a GS, it wouldn't have done me any good... Andy.. Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Graphics Question Subj: Agate & Unzip 91-05-07 18:22:45 EDT From: AFL DannyH Posted on: America Online Darn, I am sorry to hear that about AGATE. I have tried AGATE on three files from the PC Forums' Libararies. All three unzipped correctly. I am going to try to get the AGATE author for an ACM chat. Perhaps he can shed some light on the unzip utility's capabilities. dannyhaynes Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Graphics Question Subj: Agate 069, Unzip 91-05-09 07:39:04 EDT From: GSGM Posted on: America Online I downloaded Agate to try the UnZip process on it, but I don't see any instuctions in the manual on how to unzip files? Does anyone know how? I read in one of the messages here about UnZip2.0 where can I get that? GSGM Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Graphics Question Subj: Agate 069 Quit 91-05-09 07:40:03 EDT From: GSGM Posted on: America Online One more question, how do you quit Agate back to ProDos/GSOS? GSGM Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Graphics Question Subj: Agate 91-05-09 07:58:43 EDT From: LL AndyW Posted on: America Online To UnZip a file, just open it, select the individual pieces to extract, and it will just do it. Check the opening menu, or OA-? for the other commands, including quit... Andy... Hmmm... 90-12-13 00:50:09 EDT From: AFC GaryG Posted on: America Online Now that's an idea, but can we have a font that's in color? (Actually, COLORS) The real thing about ANSI is not only the VT-100 stuff on the screen, but the colors. Seems Snowterm would be a good candidate for this, as it uses the SHR screen for display. Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Subj: Color ANSI Font... 90-12-13 19:43:51 EDT From: Surak TFF Posted on: America Online Once you have a font, you can draw the letters in whatever color you choose, even on the 640 mode screen (a la AppleWorks GS)... The problem is getting someone to sit there and make a font... Dan Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Subj: ANSI Font 90-12-15 12:24:21 EDT From: GS Express Posted on: America Online Getting an ANSI font is no problem at all. If you can do something with it, I can have one uploaded here before the end of the day. I would just need to extract the ANSI font used by ZTerm on the Macintosh, and use Resspy to convert it to a GS font...piece of cake :) Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Subj: ANSI emulator 91-01-05 17:01:52 EDT From: Runt S Posted on: America Online The AGATE program for the II,II+,IIe,IIc,IIgs. They are able to see and duplicate the ANSI character for IBM, It is missing the colors but not the characters, it also doesn't have music... Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Subj: Colors are the problem 91-01-10 22:30:48 EDT From: JohnSnow Posted on: America Online The real problem with color ANSI emulation -- and by ANSI emulation we're not really talking about an ANSI standard, only the IBM PC implementation of the same ANSI standard that the VT100 follows -- is that the GS doesn't have enough color capabilities to do it properly. Since ANSI color graphics allows the color to be changed at each and every character, there aren't enough color combinations available to do all combinations. For example, in SnowTerm, dithering is not used due to readability considerations. A dithered font is very difficult to read. If you don't believe me, use the communications module of AWGS. If dithering is not used, any one scan line only has a palette of 4 colors to choose from. SnowTerm uses all four colors of the palette as follows: 1 color for the background, 1 color for the normal text color, one color for the BOLD text color, and 1 color for flashing text. Thus, there are NO colors left to implement alternate text and background colors! Of coarse, if BOLD and flashing are not wanted, two colors would be freed up, but you still couldn't provide the unrestricted combinations of colors on any scan line. --John Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Subj: WHERE CAN I GET AGATE? 91-03-01 00:41:39 EDT From: Backdoor1 Posted on: America Online I was wondering where to get AGATE. I can't seem to find it. Also, this is for GS Express, Did you ever get that ANSII font made. I have been looking for something that does ANSII for awhile. Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Subj: Where's AGATE? 91-03-01 02:58:26 EDT From: AFC GaryG Posted on: America Online You can find the latest version of AGATE in the ACM. (Apple Comm Forum) Go Software Libraries/Terminal Software, and it's in the first screen. Gary Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Subj: Backdoor 91-03-02 14:34:55 EDT From: GS Express Posted on: America Online No, I haven't "made" the ANSI font yet. I wasn't actually going to make one from scratch...I was going to suck the ANSI fonts out of ZTerm on the Mac, and convert them to GS fonts using ResSpy. Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Subj: Thanks 91-03-03 01:04:50 EDT From: Backdoor1 Posted on: America Online Thanks guys for helping me find this...Does it do color graphics? Guess I'll find out. Later. Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Subj: AGATE 91-03-23 00:05:48 EDT From: DONUT0 Posted on: America Online I have a copy of Agate which I got off of Wuarchive.wustl.edu, but I can't seem to get to entering the autodial numbers do I have an old version of the program??? here's an idea perhaps we could make a compressed 320 mode font which would still alow for 80 columns (it could be done, there was an 80 column font using old apple hi-res) I was considering doing this, does anyone have a current list of the ansi/vt100 codes, I was thinking of trying to write a color ansi gs program.. -Donut0 Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Subj: ANSI 91-04-01 22:47:55 EDT From: AFL DannyH Posted on: America Online Donuto, to do ansi, you would have to display on your screen 132 characters per line. That's a little much for the Apple's built in video. There was a company that made a card to display 132 cols on the Apple. I believe it the card was called VideoTerm. dannyhaynes Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Subj: 132 columns? 91-04-02 03:16:44 EDT From: LL AndyW Posted on: America Online 132 columns isn't necessary to use ANSI, however, there are other problems associated with ANSI that makes it impossible to do a full implementation on any of the Apple // series. The card you mentioned is not the one that handles 132 columns. The one that does 132x48 is the UltraTerm. (I have one). A limited ANSI can be implemented on the //gs, and an even more limited ANSI on the //e. Things like colored text/background can't be done on the text screen since there's no way to control individual character color, only the whole screen at a time, and IBM graphics characters aren't in the character set anyway. Useing graphics mode, blinking characters can't be done, and a large interrupt buffer would be needed since scrolling the screen takes quite a long time.. Andy.. Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Subj: ANSI 91-04-02 20:18:55 EDT From: AFL Dyfet Posted on: America Online First, the software that ran '80 columns' on the old II hires actually did 70 columns, not 80! It used what were in effect 4 bit wide fonts and used some slightly odd video artifacts/phase shifting with II color image genoration cicutry to make an ALMOST readable 'm' with so few pixels. In regards to ansi and the IIgs, there is no clear way to create a 640 mode font that would allow 16 foreground/background colors. Dithering would tend to 'smear' the font. You still have 4 colors/pixel resolution. You could change pallette sets for different print lines, but if a given line uses more than 4 colors, you will have problems :)... Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Subj: ANSI - blinking 91-04-13 12:43:29 EDT From: JohnSnow Posted on: America Online Your absolutely correct in saying that there is no way to support full ANSI colors on the GS in 640 graphics mode. I've had countless requests for adding color ANSI support to my VT-100 emulator SnowTerm. I'd love to do it, but it just isn't possible. The previous posting suggested that there is no way to do blinking text on the GS in graphics mode. This is not true. SnowTerm runs in 640 graphics mode on the GS and does implement all VT-100 character attributes including blinking, bold, reverse video, underline, and double height and double width characters. --John Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Subj: Ansi & blinking characters 91-04-14 11:30:44 EDT From: AFL DannyH Posted on: America Online John, thanks for the insight on the blinking characters on a GS. SnowTerm in my opinion, as well as many others, is the BEST VT100 emmulator available. I personally do not have a need for vt100, but those that do, should really try SnowTerm. dannyhaynes Path: Terminal Software/ANSI Subj: SnowTerm 91-04-14 20:27:49 EDT From: AFC GaryG Posted on: America Online I've said this about 100 times, and I'll say it 100 more if I have to. If you want VT-100, and you want to get as close to ANSI-type graphics as you're going to find for your IIgs, you want to get SnowTerm. It's as simple as that. Download Snowterm...try it, and if you like it, send John the (very fair) shareware fee.
