i really feel your pain on this. that looming unread number was messing me up so bad i had to completely change how i use social media. its hard and takes an inhuman amount of self control.
with rss i have my approach of "if i like this thing so much i will definitely read all of it" i keep it there, otherwise it gets put in the bookmarks folder of cool websites to read when i wanna. whatever solution you land on, i wish you luck :)

yes I have to realize I can't read everything. I did make some bookmarks for the high frequency posting sites which are mostly tech news and removed those RSS subscriptions. I had 23 posts to read when I got home, that's much better. And I can view them all in the main unread feed list without having to go to the indexed list with unread numbers.
