I think the comment on this article already made a lot of good points about it; while the goal in Stoicism was to make your peace, so to speak, with the status quo, Epicurus literally encouraged a life "away from culture" and put out a lot of questions about how necessary certain laws are or if worshipping beauty is worth it. Of course he also discouraged a political career (which back then was more war centered naturally). That made Stoicism, which didn't care if you had a political career or not, more attractive to political leaders then and now. Those are some of the things modern Stoics definitely have more in common with the core idea of Stoicism than Epicureanism imo. · 11 months ago
