Just discovered the world of low power fanless x86 thin clients on eBay. At least one of the Wyse models supports up to 16GB ECC RAM and has a decent (2GHz quad core) processor, and you can get it for $30 if you are patient. I see a bargain basement server in my future...

Finished the prototype for my handheld DIY computer (really a Raspberry Pi Zero dock). It boots! The soldering is terrible and the joints will probably break if I bump it too hard but it boots! Will do a write up when I have time.

Wanted to share this for the homebrew PDA enthusiasts: https://github.com/mudita/MuditaOS. I think this would make a good basis for a PDA OS, as it's built on FreeRTOS and is designed for an e-ink display.

Happy birthday to the late Aaron Swartz, co-creator of Markdown. Without that work who knows if Gemtext would even exist. http://www.aaronsw.com/weblog/001189

Somehow I missed the publication this month of The General Index on archive.org: https://archive.org/details/GeneralIndex. It's a searchable database of 107,233,728 journal articles, indexed with n-grams up to 5.

It's too bad that Unicode hieroglyphs are so hard to make out, they would make an excellent replacement for emoji ๐“€

Thinking about how Gemini would be an OK frontend for Secure Scuttlebutt. Most of the current frontends are HTML, which requires a browser. A small SSB->Gemini server backed by something like go-ssb could help simplify the stack a bit.

Thought some people here might be interested in this, it's a service to turn web pages into an epub for offline reading: https://epub.press/

Successfully transferred my Station cert to Amfora. I would guess I'm about 70% moved away from my smartphone. A long process, but worth it.

Version 4 of my 3d printed Raspberry Pi handheld is maybe "good enough," at last. It's a pleasure to see everything fitting in where it needs to go. 3d printers are amazing! This would have cost a fortune to build any other way.

I made a script to automatically dither all images in your Gemini site and fix up the links. Should be useful for automated builds. https://git.sr.ht/~mntn/gemdither

Just found "Elan School." Truly horrifying... I just read the whole thing in one sitting. Still processing it. The fact that places like this have existed (and surely continue to exist) is nightmare-inducing. https://elan.school

I wonder about the people who loudly complain about FOSS "branding" on Hacker News. What are they hoping to achieve? What do they dream about? Why do they always insist on making stale jokes about Mastodon "toots?"

Does anyone else wish that a client would support code highlighting? Preformatted blocks are open to client interpretation, so the optional "alt text" could be used for indicating the language as it is in Markdown. I think Gemini is a great medium for reference documentation, and this would make it more useful for that.

I've been giving some thought to a Gemini commenting service, similar to Disqus. My own capsule is a static site (and I'll probably keep it that way) but I might want to offer comments. It would be useful to link to, say baseurl.com/my-name/unique-post-id; visitors could comment and view all comments associated with the post. The service could handle identities and spam management. Just a wild idea, maybe I'll use it as an excuse to learn Rust.
