I want to introduce you all to my idea of a "pleasant computer" - It's a computer, either factory made or built yourself, that brings you calm and comfort to use. Maybe a gentle sense of nostalgia. It might not have the biggest and best specs out there. It might not even have modern hardware. But a pleasant computer is a joy to use. For me, it's a beige box Pentium machine that runs Windows 95 or 3.1. What about you all? Any pleasant computer builds? :)

I have a lot of nostalgia for DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows 98, the iMacs they had at my local library around the turn of the millenium, and whichever OS my uncle's Apple PowerPC used to run. I wouldn't say these would be a joy to use now, though. So much of what I liked about my experiences with those machines depended on everything else that was going on in the world and in my life at the time. I've built and emulated retro machines, but it's not the same.

I'm presently trying to build a "pleasant computing" experience for my current stage of life, but it's a fairly big undertaking given the depth of my requirements now. · 2 weeks ago
