Pete and I were driving back home from a job out at old Chin's farm in Boyner. And in the afternoon on the way home, we swing through Port Rodiqum to hit up the Wal-Mart for some supplies. And after that we stop at Brackin Park, where the little-league baseball used to be based out of. We stop to eat the ham sandwiches that Dr. Chin gave us, which had this really tasty honey mustarn in them. Anyways, the park has washrooms that someone is still maintaining, in a building by the dugouts. And so I go in there, and the lights are all out, which is a bit weird. And then I notice someone is in there already. In the corner, there is this little old woman sitting on the floor, dressed in rags. And I mean she is indescribably old, old like I never saw before. And all around her on the floor tiles are little candles, like tea-lights, flickering and casting her shadow on the wall behind. She is staring evenly at me. And in a voice as scratchy as a bag of twigs, she says, "You have come the wrong way, Jone." I'm just staring back, dumbfounded.
And then I notice all her candles are electric ones, the fake flickering LED kind with the button batteries that you buy in packs of 3 at Dollaroonie. With no change in her face, the old woman says, "The wi-fi is not working right now." And I don't know how to respond to that either. Then I blink my eyes, and she and all her LED candles are suddenly gone, and the fluorescent tube lights on the ceiling blink back on. And I pee and I get out of there, and I think I won't ever be back. But I somehow have this feeling that I will be seeing her again.
And we're back in the truck and about to head, when one of the number tiles falls off the old scoreboard where we parked under, and lands on the windshield. "9".
