Aequum est quidquid omnes colunt unum putari. Eadem spectamus astra, commune caelum est, idem nos mundus involvit: quid interest qua quisque prudentia verum requirat? Uno itinere non potest perveniri ad tam grande secretum.
-- Q. Aurelii Symmachi Relatio III, 10 (de ara Victoriae)
It is fair to deem as one what everyone worships. We behold the same stars, there is one sky for all of us and we are part of the same world: does it matter by which wisdom one seeks Truth? We cannot reach such a great mistery by one path only.
Historical outline: During the late empire Christianity was growing in boldness and was getting more and more power by the day, at the expense of the many who still followed their ancestral religion or other cults of their choice. Quintus Aurelius Symmachus was one of the last pagan senators who stood against the intolerant tide of Christianity in defense of the "mos maiorum" (the tradition of the elders). In the hall of the Roman senate there was a statue of the goddess of Victory, to whom the senators used to pay their respects. This quote is part of a speech Symmachus held in order to convince the emperor not to give in to the Christians' request to remove the deity who had Rome in her favor for most of its history: but we all know how things turned out. Nevertheless, it is an outstanding witness of the religious tolerance of the Romans. We would have to wait almost two thousand years before getting there again.
