FOR THE third year in a row the Newcastle West senior footballers are
in the Limerick county final against rivals Adare and with each final
comes more excitement for the club and it’s members.
A long-time member of the Newcastle West committee and the current
chairperson Margaret Hannan says “for someone like me it is very
pleasing to see the club reaching finals regardless of the result and
the three in a row chase is something that is slightly taboo at the
moment but we will see now on Sunday.
"Progressing to finals and being able to compete for silverware is an
incredible achievement and our club has been lucky enough over the last
number of years to feature in plenty of those games. You always learn
more from losing than you do from winning but it’s fabulous to be back
in another final”.
The Newcastle West clubs prides themselves on their dual status in both
hurling and football and the importance of players being allowed to
play both sports to the best of their ability.

Margaret knows all too well the importance of keeping young players
motivated in the club at both sports and with another final around the
corner the belief and excitement in the underage teams is palpable.
“Our smallies are looking up to the boys, they see them around the
town, in and out to the pitch, so when they can relate to our senior
players it is something for them to attain.
"Everyone is always on about the county hurlers and footballers but
kids can also have heroes in their local clubs and these players are in
a position where our kids feel they too can reach at some stage.
"That is not to say that some of our underage kids will not make county
teams in the future but being able to strive for a position on the
senior team first is everything to them.”
Newcastle West were unbeaten in their championship group run with five
wins all together and have not met Adare yet this year making the 2023
final even more intriguing.
