Nitter could be ported to Gemini, there are server libs for nim

, diffrent discourse forums,

Enable mailing list mode and you can use Discourse through email

older pho based forums (most notesbly brass goggles.) And on and on..

Brass Goggles appears to have Tapatalk support (http://brassgoggles.co.uk/forum/mobiquo/mobiquo.php) so it's possible to make a non-web viewer.

Which has left me pondering how 'we' would handle communities, or even if
'we' should.
There is as far as I am aware, without going to http/s:
* Mailing lists. (... snip ...)
* BBS; (... snip ...)

There's also NNTP/Usenet. IIRC groups can be hosted on their own server oras part of the actual Usenet network.
