MARY CRILLY, a longtime campaigner for women’s rights, was recently the

guest speaker at the Cork Rotary Club’s meeting at the Metropole Hotel.

Mary is the co-founder and CEO of the Sexual Violence Centre Cork.

Founded on International Women’s Day in 1983, the centre provides a

range of confidential and free-of-charge supports and services to the

survivors of rape, sexual assault, and child sexual abuse.

A dedicated and active campaigner for women rights, Ms Crilly was

previously honoured with the Freedom of Cork in recognition of her

work.

Ms Crilly spoke passionately about the need to reduce the incidences of

sexual violence in our society and to better support victims.

Rotary president Tim O’Mahony thanked Ms Crilly on behalf of the club

and praised her for her enormous contribution over 40 years to the

civic life of Cork, through her support for victims of sexual violence.

Cork Rotary Club supports many local organisations and charities from

the proceeds of the Tree of Remembrance which is erected outside Brown

Thomas at Patrick Street, in the run-up to Christmas each year.

In launching this year’s event, Mr O’Mahony put out the call for people

in Cork to help with this great fundraising event, either monetarily or

by volunteering for some shifts collecting at the tree.

The giant tree at Patrick Street, festooned with thousands of yellow

ribbons, has become synonymous with Christmas in Cork.

Over the past 20 years, this very successful project has raised more

than €1m for many local charities, thanks to the generosity of the

people of Cork.

If you can help with volunteering for a few hours, any time from

December 9 to 24, (indoors in the custom-made cabin), email

secretary@corkrotary.ie or text or WhatsApp 087-2569322 or 087-2561873,

to organise a time that suits you.
