Anguis fragilis - 2021-06-20

my gardening companion was warning me about the snake near my feet; i was saying that Guernsey does not have snakes and that it was probably a slow worm. after a few exchanges like that we established that it was in fact a slow worm: Anguis fragilis. i have not seen one this size before. sadly these are normally seen as roadkill, usually smaller.

i estimate that it was about 30 cm in length: possibly 15 years old.

2021-05-27 - slow worm whole length (105K).

2021-05-27 - slow worm head and most of body (154K).

2021-05-27 - slow worm head close (155K).

2021-05-27 - slow worm tail and most of body (139K).

2021-06-20 - wikipedia article about the slow worm: Anguis fragilis.

2008-01-28 - BBC article about legless lizards in Guernsey (archived, not updated, not https).
