The Donkey Sanctuary Ireland has welcomed a new member of its adoption

donkey family, Snowdrop.

A sweet-natured donkey with a bright white coat, he officially joined

the other 11 adoption donkeys on Friday November 3.

Snowdrop’s journey to the sanctuary began five years ago when he was

rescued at just five months old, after an incredibly challenging start

to his life.

He and his mother, Snowflake, were part of a group of donkeys suffering

through the cold winter with very little food and no shelter to shield

themselves from the harsh conditions.

When The Donkey Sanctuary Ireland’s welfare team found Snowdrop, he was

suffering from overgrown hooves and rain scald, and his mother was

battling chronic laminitis and struggling to cope with her energetic

son.

The Donkey Sanctuary Ireland provided immediate attention from the vet

and farrier, before transporting the donkeys to the New Arrivals unit

at one of their four farms where both donkeys have made a remarkable

recovery.

Snowdrop has transformed into a confident and sociable donkey, full of

energy and ready to make new friends.

“Snowdrop’s story is a true testament to the resilience of donkeys and

the incredible transformation that can happen with the right care and

support,” said Cathy Griffin, Head of Welfare at The Donkey Sanctuary.

“We are thrilled to introduce him as our newest adoption donkey - this

allows our supporters to contribute to his ongoing care, and the

welfare of other donkeys.”

Snowflake, Snowdrop’s mother, has also found a new lease on life, and

is now living with a special group of donkeys managing laminitis.

She has access to soft bedding and easy walks to the fields, and the

team ensures she maintains an ideal weight to help prevent flare-ups.

“By adopting Snowdrop, our supporters are giving the gift of hope to

all donkeys suffering in the cold this Christmas,” added Cathy.

“We are grateful for the ongoing support of our community, who are

helping us keep Snowdrop, Snowflake, and hundreds of other donkeys

across Ireland, warm this winter.”

Members of the public can meet Snowdrop at their Open Farm in Cork,

which is located in Liscarroll village and open from Friday-Monday,

9am-4pm.
