Ahoy! CAPCOM is currently aggregating 98 feeds from across Geminispace. I intend to cap the number of feeds at 100. The situation is not quite as urgent as it sounds - I can cull some feeds which haven't successfully been fetched in a long time because the servers appear to disappeared, and perhaps I will also remove feeds which have not been updated in, say, over six months. My motivation for doing this is to encourage a decentralised Geminispace. As software support for the new lightweight subscription idea increases, it's going to become easier than ever before for people to decide whose content to follow for themselves, and to set up their own aggregators - either for their own private use, or as public instances. If anybody has been looking for a nice Gemini project to help contribute to the development of the community, setting up a themed public aggregator is something worth considering. You could set up aggregators of tech gemlogs (or non-tech gemlogs), of political gemlogs (or non-political gemlogs), gemlogs in non-English languages, gemlogs written by people in particular parts of the world, gemlogs written by minority groups whom you'd like to give visibility to, solarpunk gemlogs, photography gemlogs, whatever you like. Setting up such aggregators not only makes it easier for people to find the content they like, it sends a clear message to would-be content creators that interest exists, and encourages people to start writing knowing they'll have an audience. If you set up a themed public aggregator, feel free to let me know and I will add links to the main gemini.circumlunar.space in the "Geminispace aggregators" section after CAPCOM and Spacewalk. Cheers, Solderpunk
One on hand, I think it's too bad that CAPCOM won't work so much as the defacto homepage, but I understand that this was always a precarious position as Gemini grows. I will be happy to see more aggregators pop up, and I think linking to them on CAPCOM's page is 100% the right way to do it. On the other side of things, I encourage client authors to add aggregation to their clients, as I've written about[1]. This is coming in Amfora[2] and I'm very excited about it. I've been working on it recently. One thing I'm wondering about this CAPCOM culling is whether favouring the old gemlogs is a good idea. CAPCOM will become more and more "dated" as time goes on. Would it be better if periodically CAPCOM updated to tracking the newest gemlogs in Geminispace? So it would allow new people's capsules and gemlogs to be discovered. I'm not sure how well this fits with the current method of emailing you to be added to CAPCOM, but I think it's an interesting idea. 1: gemini://makeworld.gq/gemlog/2020-08-02-personal-feeds.gmi 2: https://github.com/makeworld-the-better-one/amfora/issues/61 Cheers, makeworld

The burden of me manually maintaining CAPCOM in response to emails is a (small) additional motivation to put in a 100 feed cap. I guess I could look into setting up a submission system using status code 10 to let people add URLs, and have CAPCOM aggregate, say, 100 feeds selected at random from the pool, with a new 100 being selected on the 1st of each month. This way it would become some kind of "Geminispace rotating sampler"... Cheers, Solderpunk
