Apple II History Magnum Opus

2023-01-04 | #apple | @Acidus

I am a big fan of Steven Weyhrich's incredibly detailed history of the Apple II, written in the 1990's over *23* different text files! Depending on how you measure it, in total it's between 300 and 400 pages! Over the years, Steven has continued to edit it, add additional content, and even port it to HTML with some added low quality images. These versions are scattered around the web and even Geminispace, in various states of completeness:

Original textfile version (Part 1)

Early 2000's HTML version (All)

PDF of everything from 1998

This is really interesting content that I wanted to preserve and share in a more modern form. Specifically I am:

This is a work in progress. I've fully completely 4 of the 23 files. Technically I've done 8 of them, but today I decided on some additional things I want to standardize into each of the stories, and only 4 of are up to that standard.

You can read Gemtext version of Steven's Apple II History on my capsule now:

The Markdown I created and used to generate the Gemtext is available as well:

Apple II History (Markdown Export)

If this sounds familiar it is. This process is exactly what I did with Andy Hertzfeld's amazing Folklore.org site, which chronicles the creation of the Macintosh: I cleaned up the source content, converted it to markdown, and then generated a Gemtext version.

Folklore.org's Apple History (Markdown Export)

More to come?

Between these 2 projects, plus my work on Gemipedia and NewsWaffle, I've built some pretty robust code and publishing pipelines that make it faster to convert HTML content to Markdown and Gemtext. I plan to generate more story archives in Gemini from other interesting, properly licensed web content soon!
