part 1 (where the holiday company went bust)
We arrived in Kaş, and I went into the bus station toilets. They'd built a fair toilet block, but not ever connected the plumbing. There was a gap between the pip and the porcelain. Everything was horribly stained and it stank. That's how your town makes a first impression!
Our hotel was almost empty. We felt sorry for the owner whose income had disappeared. We carried on enjoying the culture and seeing the sights until on a boat trip we forgot not to eat the salad in local cafes. I don't think I've ever been so ill. I didn't know which end of my body to put over the toilet bowl. I tried to see if I could sit on it and be sick in the sink at the sane time. No, they were too far apart.
After a couple of days I felt slightly better. I thought I'd go to the rooftop bar for some kind of fizzy sugary drink. I'd thrown my clothes on the floor. When I picked them up there was a scorpion underneath. I put a glass over it so it couldn't sting me or escape and found the hotel owner on the rooftop. I asked him what I should do with it. He didn't seem that concerned.
"What colour is it?"
"Brown."
"Only the black ones will kill you. Just throw it out of the window."
I have no idea if this was sound advice. Don't rely on it if you are faced with a scorpion. I thought it might well go into a room on the ground floor, but I threw it out of the window anyway.
