It's only been a week
The rush of being home in rapid fading
I remember experiencing some feelings when I first tried out GeoCities. I didn't have internet access at home, so my time in the driver's seat was initially short.
The failing to recall
What I was missing all that time in England
I remember this sense of excitement and possibility. I knew of a tenuous connection between HTML and Web Browsers, yet I made a simple page on the first try with GeoCities' site creation tools.
Has sent me aimlesly
On foot or by the help of transportation
As a high-schooler, I knew websites existed but did not understand their purpose. Computers were rare where I lived, and extrapolating my personal experience (poor practice!) to the rest of the world, it did not seem to me that websites could help reach large numbers of people.
To knock on windows where
A friend no longer lived, I had forgotten
Several decades later, on the other side of several boom and bust cycles, I am reminded of GeoCities and the excitement I once felt. I don't believe I am experiencing the same excitement. I remember some things that started out as very simple or innocent and have aged poorly.
And everywhere I go
There's always something to remind me
I remember the pre-algorithmic web, where my attention and engagement were not being gamed. I think this is where some of the excitement may be coming from.
Of another place and time...
