IndieWeb Notes

IndieWeb is a good concept (nominally, at least), as is Small Web. Not that I think these initiatives are in any way definitive of a movement towards a more diverse and independent web, but they certainly contribute to it.

On the down-side, IndieWeb in particular seems something of an obfuscated mess. I can't imagine many creative people getting excited by what it purveys - it seems more of a social gathering than a directed initiative. I can't seem to find many fruits of its labour, but it might just be that I'm currently blind to them.

Below is a list of what I could find and make sense of:

Indie Map is a crawl of 2300 IndieWeb sites as of June 2017. Most useful is the raw crawl data in WARC format. Unfortunately it's held on Google Cloud Storage, and it seems that you have to install Google binaries to get it - either that or use the web interface to download 2300 zip files! Either way, a Google account is required.

The indieweb.org /discovery page lists a number of discovery services. A number of the links are stale or broken, but there are still some useful links. Also, a list of wiki contributors who may have interesting homepages.

indieweb.xyz is a categorised directory. There's not particularly fresh content, and it seem the sites it tracks have a small number of contributors, but it has some interesting stuff to explore.

A search engine of IndieWeb pages. Site verification failed for me when I tried to add my site (no checks were appearing in my server logs), so I suspect this has gone stale. Still, may be of some use.

Overall, a rather sad and disheartening experience. Big talk, but no action.
