hey, i haven't written in some time. i've been distracted with things as usual! butterflying kind of describes my mood right now. i'm just fluttering from idea to idea and hobby to hobby xD no deeper meaning than that...
i've continued mostly focusing on icelandic in january. i found a book at the library called short stories in icelandic. aside from the intro it's 100% in icelandic and i really like it! it's aimed at learners of the language so it's written in an easy way but it's still in-depth and challenging at times~ actually for the first half of the book, i felt like i understood 90% of what was going on but the last few chapters have been more challenging, with harder grammar and more in-depth topics. this author made similar books for other languages too, and i'd love to check them out someday
for some time i've wanted to learn one of the continental nordic languages and i was always torn between norwegian and swedish. i can't explain it exactly, but i really love how norwegian sounds and something about it just feels..nostalgic?? that probably sounds really funny aha.. but i have more swedish friends than norwegian friends right now, and swedish is more different from icelandic than norwegian is, so i'm kind of excited to learn about it too~
i'm doing very little right now.. i just changed my computer/phone languages to swedish and am doing duolingo and drops every day to get a feel for how it's pronounced and looks overall. when i finish the icelandic short stories book, i'm thinking about maybe taking time to focus on swedish more!
have you heard of the yesterweb? if you're on gemini, there's probably a good chance you have... anyways, i discovered it and oh my gosh! some of the pages there are the most beautiful things i've seen on a computer in so long. i first learned html when i was in elementary school and back then i was discovering blinkies and marquis and all these things long forgotten. the yesterweb, neocities, and the web 1.0 revival movement in general remind me of the excitement i felt back then and i'm just itching to delve into it again! i'm always slow at starting new habits but this is something i feel like i won't let go until i start doing it, whenever that ends up being lol
i got a switch in january! finally x.x i've never really had a console with online accounts before... tbh i'm still kind of not super on board with it, because what if nintendo just takes away games i'm buying, bans me for whatever reason, or simply stops existing... none of these things will happen *probably* but it still makes me uncomfortable. i think i'll start buying cartridges for that reason even though they're more expensive at times /looks at stardew valley T-T/
but anyways i'm trying new things so i got a nintendo account and downloaded some games~ i'm mostly playing stardew valley and pokemon shield right now, but i have more on my wishlist! i love how they do promos often too. i bought one game called gleamlight for 300 yen when it was on promo and i don't think i would have bought it otherwise but i kind of like it. it's your typical side scroller game but the graphics have a geode aesthetic that i really love!
i only wish the platform were more open, and that i could watch videos on the sd card or something, because the screen is really beautiful. maybe there are jailbreaking options out there, but i don't know if i'd lose access to games i bought online... aha yap downloading games is easy and convenient but part of me inside is still like,, あれっ?~ xD
oh tech. how i hate loving you. my main laptop runs freebsd now and.. overall, i do like it. freebsd feels very clean and well put together. i've had some really annoying problems with it however that are making me reconsider things actually. first is that my best laptop, an 8th gen x1 carbon, isn't supported - namely the wifi card. so i'm using a slightly older laptop that was supposed to be a backup, a 6th gen x1 carbon.
i love both laptops, but idk if this one is just old and has hardware problems or what, but wifi is atrociously slow on here. i have long ping times pinging local devices sometimes, and rsyncing anything is basically always 100Kbps. the other problem i have is that the laptop can't resume from sleep most of the time. it just soft-bricks, and i have to hard reset and lose all my work. these are really the two biggest problems for me, every thing else is minor. still, they've been hard to debug and i haven't had much success with either...
i'm not giving up just yet, because i really really want to like freebsd, but these are deal-breakers and if i can't fix them i'll have to move again ;-; btw if you have any ideas i'm all ears! my email and pgp key are on my gemroot~
