This isn't relevant to Gemini, since 404 is an HTTP status code.
OpenBSD's httpd doesn't allow you to use a custom 404 error page (unless you modify the source code). By default, it is simple and unattractive but most importantly it is lightweight.
All a 404 page needs to say is
I don't want to wait 30 seconds for all your headers and navbar and external stylesheets and even Javascript to load, just for you to tell me that the page doesn't exist. Just say a simple 'no'.
