Frequent readers of my blog may remember that in my new year's goals post, I set a rather lofty target for myself. The day before I wrote that post, I had just played a very casual kickabout with the guys and had scored 7 goals, so I foolishly thought I would be able to score 100 goals in this calendar year.
April was a high scoring month, but truth be told, the quality of the goals I scored was very low. It seems as though at least half of my goals were scrappy toe pokes or rebounded efforts.
This was another match in which I quickly ran out of energy and spent the majority of the match running on empty steam. In fact I was fortunate to score any goals at all in this game.
The first of my goals was as scrappy as they come. I latched on to a through ball at the edge of the box, and was one on one with the goalkeeper. I shot once and the keeper parried it away but he put it straight back in my path. My follow up struck the post, once again returning to where I kicked it from. Finally, an off-balanced right footed effort managed to squeeze between my opponent and the woodwork.
Unfotunately, my second goal has escaped me, but much like all the others, it probably wasn't worth writing about. This should serve as a reminder to spend a few minutes writing these updates on the evening of the match.
This week's solitary goal was perhaps the pick of the month for April. The ball came out to me whilst I was waiting on the left wing. I ran infield at a 45° angle which resulted in me actually running past the mouth of goal. On my way to the edge of the box, I dribbled past two opposing players and kept on going. The goalkeeper was confused by the way that I ran past him, and I took his confusion as an opportunity. I unleashed a no look pass that trickled past the keeper into the bottom left corner.
This match was the first match against real opposition that I've played in since December. We thought that we would be playing a team of old Chinese men, but our reputation is well known throughout these parts, and the original team chose to back down. As a result of their cowardice, there was an opportunity for a team full of football coaches to step up as our opposition.
We got off to a good start and managed to pull a few goals a head early on. I managed to get my name on the score sheet quite early too, when I poked home a well worked team goal from about three yards out.
My second goal was quite a lucky goal. I was standing at then end of the opposition box between two defenders, when a well placed trough ball managed to bypass their midfield and find its way between the two defenders I was occupying and landed right at my feet. It would have been more difficult to miss a shot like that.
The final two goals were both very similar. I was lurking near the half way line, shirking my defensive responsibilities waiting for a counter attacking chance. As our team's main attacking outlet at the time, as soon as anyone won the ball, they'd quickly pump it out to me on the right wing. I controlled the ball nicely both times before firing home firstly with my left and then ten minutes later with my right.
On the whole, April was kind of a forgettable goalscoring month, depsite it being my highest return so far this year. As the weather is getting warmer, there will perhaps be opportunities for more matches, but that remains to be seen.
