I decided to run my own personal instance, which runs nicely of course, but they definitely still have work to do with the UX. Subscribing to communities on other instances is a bit of a pain...

sdf has a lemmy instance at lemmy.sdf.org that you might want to try.
Yeah like skyjake said, Lemmy is definitely a project that still needs some development time, but it works ok.
I am using feddit.de (since I am German and it has german language subs)
So far I think its pretty good, at least as good as reddit for my needs. I would like some acessability features like import export subs and optional metadata tags for nsfw so I can auto filter gore and certain porn from my feed. other than that I think Lemmy is in the sweet spot with enough active users to feel like a real growing community.
geddit.social works for me quite alright. The admin is a nice person!
