What games have you been playing recently?

Lately I've been playing my Wii a ton (feels weird calling it retro, but it's not getting any younger either), which has been a blast. Current games I'm working through are:

The Sims games are always favorites, and Pikmin is fun too, great choices!

I do most of my gaming on the PC, so my now-playing list reflects that:

Currently elden ring and stardew valley have consumed a lot of my time, over the summer sale ive been getting a frw games that look fun or relaxing like pizza tower, spiritfairer, hypnospace outlaw, and potion crafter. II REALLY REALLY wanted to get the on sale steam deck but just cant eat 500$ on a gaming device right now, building my nest egg is top priority.

This week I've mostly been playing a couple retro homebrew games on my Odoid Go Advance and various games on my Playdate. Unearthed for GBC is a fun sci-fi puzzle game. Tapeworm Disco Puzzle for NES (and other systems) is a goofy puzzle game but pretty fun. Oh and I also played some Crush Roller for the Neo Geo Pocket Color. It's kind of a pac-man-like.

@Smokey I just wanted to put in my 2 cents that the Steam Deck is definitely worth it. I've been using one as my primary PC for 6+ months now and I have no complaints.

If you want to save some money, the version that's $359 on Steam right now is perfectly adequate. It's really easy to expand the storage with a fast SD card that you can also use for other stuff. The loading/access times are the same for gaming, I can't tell a difference as to which drive the games are on.

Or you can *actually* save money and not buy one, I'm just saying it's a good computer, not just a gaming device. :)

@Ruby_Witch The name "Terranova" brought to mind this gem from 1996:

β€” Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri

I haven't thought of this game in many years! Just like the same developer's "Ultima Underworld" and "System Shock", this game had that magic of the early 3D games. I remember being very impressed and immersed in each, although sadly haven't had a chance to revisit them in recent years.

@ruby_witch Im the kind of person that sees the 360$ one and goes "for that money I might as well spend the extra 150$ and get the best one" its all or nothing like that for me lol. I love the idea of having a portable switch-like gaming linux pc thats also probably extremely power efficent too. But I already have a gaming pc and a decent laptop that is powerful enough to play many of the lighter games I enjoy. Im sure there will be another sale at some point maybe around winter for christmas time. Who knows, maybe I can hold off long enough for Steam Deck 2: Gaming Boogaloo

@skyjake I am *aware* of that Terra Nova from game magazine ads back in the day, but I never played it! It looks pretty cool. Maybe its existence is why this game is Terranova with no space in between. :)

@Smokey Full disclosure: I bought the most expensive one, hehe. πŸ˜†

I recently got a RG353V handheld in and I've been playing the following:

PokΓ©mon Pinball (Gameboy)

Phantasy Star Portable (PSP)

Sutte Hakkun (SNES and Gameboy) - a Japanese only puzzle game

Napple Tale (Dreamcast) - Japanese only platformer

Otherwise I recently finished up Crusader of Centy (Genesis) on my Switch

I've been trying to get through classic GBA games in the DS (r4 cart). A big one is metroid fusion. I've also ordered a powkiddy x55. Hoping I can play some indie games on it like Stardew and Celeste through ports. Technically I guess they are retro but not old games.

Also been really enjoying Unearthed since seeing @kelbot write about it! I'm also working my way through a Pokemon ROM hack called Unbound and really recommend it.

The Wii does have quite a few games that barely work but are fun regardless. Lego Lord of the Rings was one that I played the past year. Good casual co-op game.

Stardew Valley Expanded, Deceive Inc, and Crusader Kings 3

@Ruby_Witch I'm thinking of getting back into Civ 4 as well. Have you ever played any mods for it? There look to be some nice ones! I've never played 5 or 6 mostly because I've never felt like I've played 4 enough to get bored of it, haha.

@StanStani I can't say that I've messed around with mods for Civ 4 that much!

5 and 6 are fine by the way, but they're not *significantly* different. There are a few changes, the graphics are different, the narrators and music have changed.

I'm sure that some Civ purists would be happy to tell you about all of the other differences, but you're not missing much...but also there's no good reason to avoid them either. :)
