What things do you think are missing within Geminispace?
1 year ago · 👍 freezr, threkk
@krixano A gemini client for email then would be the closest thing to a low hanging fruit. · 1 year ago
@threkk If you are creating an email interface for gemini (like web interfaces), then it could work. But if you mean replacing email with gemini completely, then that involves more work than just sending messages to a live server, because you have to deal with email servers that are offline, and other things. These things have already been solved by SMTP (even though it's ancient), so we at least have something to learn from. Adding support for gemtext within email would require a bunch of email servers getting on board with allowing for that, I think. · 1 year ago
I don't see why an email client could not be possible. At the end, an email is just a private message between two users. Thanks to the certificates we have identity problem "solved", so it would be just a matter of creating a software that allows to send and receive text from different users privately. It could start with a single server implementation like the first UNIX machines, and later evolve into a protocol that allows the communication s2s. · 1 year ago
@tskaalgard Yeah, search engines can be somewhat hard to deal with, because there's lots of different problems that one must consider. However, there are 4 different gemini search engines that are working on different issues: Kennedy, GUS/Geminispace.info, TLGS, and my own search engine, AuraGem Search. I plan on writing an article comparing the results of each one to each other. TLGS and Kennedy function more like what people would expect because they use FTS and ranking based on link connections. Kennedy, TLGS, and AuraGem are all changing over time, so hopefully they all keep improving. Be sure to give feedback on bad search results for specific queries - that helps alot. · 1 year ago
@freezr I definitely agree with the translator and dictionary. I've been thinking about this for a long time actually, I've just been so busy with lots of other stuff. But, there is this database project that I plan to use that has english-language word relationships (synonyms, antonyms, etc.) which could be quite powerful. I believe it's called WordNet, and it's developed by Princeton University.
As for Gemtext in Email, that would be pretty cool actually. But I doubt it would happen very quickly. A Gemini Email Client would be interesting too. Unfortunately, since I run my server from home, I won't be able to setup any email server, since my ISP is picky. · 1 year ago
I'd like to have also a translator/dictionary... 😇 · 1 year ago
I'd like to see an email client that speaks gemtext, also a gemini email client (GemUI?) would be cool... 😁 · 1 year ago
