Digital Rights Management (DRM) for books is one of the small barbarisms of modern life. Treating books as property is as old as print, and nobody has any problems with authors and publishers receiving their due in a market-industry for books, what's asinine about DRM is that there are different formats, with different properties, that require you to have different applications, and even different physical hardware. It's a slap in the face to the notion of standards and even to the pleasure of reading books. I am happy to pay to buy books, I want to fairly use the commodity I've bought on the device I choose.
Into the breach step some of computing's heroes; the people who write DRM-busting software. It's not going too far to call these people heroes.
