I own a GridCase 1530 with 2 megs of memory which runs on a 386 CPU. I am
looking for a source for buying more memory or an internal modem, or other

Grid was bought by Tandy and later sold to AST, I think. Anyone have any
information about these machines. Reply here or to my personal in-box,

Subj: Any Tandy 2500 SX/33 Users???
Date: 95-09-06 20:43:47 EST
From: SiouxMac

Hi Folks! Nice to see a Tandy BBS here-I thought I was the only one here on
AOL with one!

I have a Tandy 2500 SX/33 which is a 386 SX and was wondering does anybody
else have one of these? What is the life span of a Tandy? When I walked into
Radio Shark and bought it back in the spring of '93 I really didn't know that
much about computers. All I knew was that I wanted one and a modem so I could
join an online service and send email to friends. Since then though I've
learned so much. Unfortanately now my Tandy VGM-225 monitor keeps on flicking
on and off on me and sometimes I have to tap the side of the thing just to
get it to come back on. It also makes this funny noise sometimes. Also, for
the past couple of days the computer has been making this funny sound sort of
like whistling whenever it's doing something like loading a file. Does
anybody know what these things might mean? Someone told me that it sounds
like my hard drive is about to crash. I really hope not because I can't
afford to buy another computer right now. Also, what have been your
experiences with Radio Shack? I've had both positive and negative experiences
with them. For instance,in my opinion some of the salespeople work there tend
to talk down to you,the pressure to buy is very high, and unfortanately I
refuse to return to the Radio Shack I bought my computer at because the
manager who works there now always asks me out and flirts with me whenever I
go in there and I'm just not interested. He really makes me feel very
uncomfortable. However we have several Radio Shacks here where I live so I
can go elsewhere. Please,if anybody else has my type of computer I'd love to
hear from you and your experiences with the Tandy computer and Radio Shack.
Thank you.

I use a Tandy 3100, which is a 486SX. I bought my computer at Radio Shack
because they are supposed to be "America's Technology Store!".

My computer works very well, and I have since upgraded my memory from 4 to 12
MB, installed a fax modem, SB16, 4X-CD ROM, and I recently installed an Intel
Overdrive chip upgrading my 486SX/33 to a 486DX/66.

Unfortunately for Radio Shack, none of the additional hardware or memory I
installed came from them. The sales staff of three different stores I
visited left me so disappointed that I bought the new stuff at various stores
(Comp USA, Staples, etc.).

In fact, recently Radio Shack let me down again. My video board came with
512KB video that is upgradeable to 1MB. Because more multi-media programs
require 1MB VRAM, I ordered the VRAM upgrade from Radio Shack. I installed
it (Very simple, just plugging 4 drams into the motherboard) and copied the
necessary SVGA driver, but...IT DOESN'T WORK!

Radio Shack customer support has not given me a satisfactory answer, and soon
I will probably just return the VRAM and live with the 512KB VRAM.

Your experience is typical: Tandy's always <talked> a good game, but when
it's time to deliver they're out to lunch. That's why most people usually get
another brand for their replacement machine...

Check out the Tandy forum here on AOL; it's around here somewhere or

Someone recently gave me a tandy 1000 tx, which I think is a 286/8mz. I am
attempting to fix it up for my mother, but I don't have a monitor for it.
The original monitor was a RGB high resolution color monitor cm-ll. Any tips
on where to find a used one, and an approximate price? Can I try any
monitor, black or white? I tried to plug my monitor into the tandy, but the
pins were different. My computer is a 486sx w/ a svga monitor. Would it be
compatible if I changed cords or would I mess up the monitor by doing that?
Any help would be appreciated!

Could this possibly be a virus? Has anyone heard of a virus that does this?

I have a few hardware related questions concerning my Tandy 3100 Model 10
(486 33 SX).

1) I recently purchased a 1.2gig hard drive. I am currently using Ontrack
Disk Manager software to utilize the full capacity of the disk. Does any one
make a co-resident Enhanced IDE Bios disk controller/High Speed IO card? If
not, can the IDE Bios on the mother board be disabled?

2) In the future I would like to upgrade the Intel 486SX 33 MHz. Are the
Intel 486DX 66 MHZ or the new Intel Pentium 83 MHz overdrive processors
approved or recommended for a processor upgrade?

3) I recently purchased an educational software package from D.C. Heath. It
runs on my 486 PC at work but will not run on my Tandy 3100 Model 10. The
software attempts to load a TSR called MetaShel - MetaWindow Graphics Driver,
Metagraphics Software Corp. The TSR never loads because the TSR thinks that
MetaShel is already resident. Are there any known conflicts with Tandy
Hardare and MetaShel?

I have a Tandy also (1992). I replaced the 140 with a 240 first right away
after I bought it. About a year ago, I replaced the 240 with a 540. I did
not slave it in as a second drive because there really was no place to mount
the drive. Also, the older Tandy sensations only have a 100 Watt power
supply and no extra power connectors available for additional drives. I
would probably have burned out the supply by over loading it with more
devices than it could handle. If I were you, I'd try to sell that 140 for
anything you can get, and just install the 540. Or you could keep it as a
backup in case your 540 ever crashes. RSstarligh.

with the upgrade. I have experienced occasional sound problems since the
upgrade, but that could be due to my pushing to hard on the mother board when
I installed the chip. By exiting windows and re entering, the sound clears
up again. The speed trade off was definitely worth the nusiance with the
sound. RSstarligh.

Date: 95-12-31 01:49:08 EST
From: GCookJxn

Adding a second drive really isn't a big deal. Current IDE drives draw
v-e-r-y little current from the power supply and that should not present any
problems. As for not having enough power connections, RS will be more than
happy to collect 5 or 6 $s form you in return for a "Y" power adaptor for
HDDs. No place to mount the drive? Trust me - this may sound hokey - but it
works: Use velcro to mount the second drive, upside down if you have to
'cause it won't matter to the drive. Unless you throw the PC off the roof, it
won't come loose or ever cause a problem. I have set up several PCs that
way, including Tandys, in order to run 2 HDDs and CD and both floppys. Good
Luck, and remember - You can NEVER have too many megs (or Gigs, as it will
be...) -=G=-

The Bios in the 3100 cannot recognize any HD larger than 528 megs.
So You have two choices....
Partion the new HD into logical drives less than 528 MB's
or
Use the software that comes with the new HD(disk manager sftware)
It overlays The original bios in Your PC so the new HD is recognized
to its fullest size.
Good Luck
Oh yea if You buy a western digital(good choice over Maxtor or conner)
just give their tech support a call when installing the new HD.If their tech
support asks,,
there is NO upgrade for Your BIOS...
Good luck

hardcard failed).
I'm looking for a replacement 40M (or so). How do I add a drive controller to

Any ideas out there of what I can do with a 1100fd laptop that works perfect?
This model had no hard drive, though the next model (1100HD) had a 20 meg
drive. Even a way of adding the 20 meg drive would be a helpful upgrade.
                                                       Any help would be
greatly appreciated,

looking for a replacement cheap. Can you help.? A nonworking model with a
good power supply would probably do the job.

Please help. We use this for training.

I have a 1400 LT and am trying to set it up as a monitor on a telephone
system to record daily phone usage. The system works great as a terminal
with one small problem.

When you leave the terminal unattended for any length of time the stand-by
mode engages and stops all functions including file transfers.

HELP. Is there any way to disable the stand-by mode and keep the system
constantly running?

Thanks for any help.

From: GDavisOpEd

I am attempting to put a generic HD 3.5 drive into my mother-in-law's Tandy
1000 TL2. I realize I need to find out how to access the whatever passes for
CMOS on the 286, and hope she has the original books (though any information
would be appreciated), but I was puzzled when I couldn't even turn the
computer on after swapping out the drives. What gives with that? Now I am
thinking of just adding the newer drive into the second drive bay so I can at
least turn it on to try to let it know it has a new drive, too. Any advice
out there?

You don't configure the BIOS on the TX. You use jumpers and switches on the
motherboard instead. There is no setup program.
