Heavy rain this morning, the trip to the lake postponed. Instead we watched the Blue Jays squeak past the Mariners, then headed to our friends' place for supper. Pasta for the main course, chocolate peanut butter pie for dessert (I told you she was a good baker).
In the reclaimed time this afternoon we gave one of the dogs a bath and I spent a few hours hacking on my forever project. I've put well over a thousand hours into it, over the years. Probably several multiples of that. I give it away on my website, offer it for free (with optional donation) on itch. I've made a few hundred bucks in a few years. Enough to cover my domain and hosting, break even, and that's enough.
What would I do if my project suddenly made me wildly rich? Or (more laughably) my writing? I don't want money to have money, I just want what it enables: a long day of coffee and creativity and nothing owed to any notion of a boss.
My daydreams always take me, have always taken me, to somewhere desolate and coastal and ideally wet. Blame growing up on the west coast. That weather gets in you. When I was a kid, I wanted to learn Irish, and daydreamed about a summer in the Gaeltacht, maybe meeting a cute girl. I never made it to the Gaeltacht, though I'm learning Irish and some fiddle music. I never met the Irish girl but I married a girl who's Irish a couple generations back. Every so often I make it to the coast and get to stare at the sea. What would I do if I were suddenly wildly rich? I'd find a little house on the ocean with good bones and write and hack on my little projects forever. Learn and forget music. That's something, right? To make things, to be part of a tradition, a link in the chain. To maybe put out trail markers for whoever comes next.
But tomorrow's a regular work day, though I love my job, and my team, and my working arrangements - still from home, from my little basement office with my Sonos speaker and kettle and coffee and tea. Sometimes the dogs sleep downstairs, curled up together in a dog bed. Other times, they sleep upstairs. But every day at lunch we go for a good walk and we all get our sunshine and our exercise. Often we'll do another walk before bed. As far as routines go, that's not bad. If these are trappings, I'll take them.
