Ice Fishing

2008-01-26

Today I went with my good friend Robb up to a place called Lost Creek Reservoir. I'd never heard of it until today, but it's a nice quiet place tucked back into some out-of-the-way canyons.

We got started at around 7:30. I drove my truck and was glad to have the four wheel drive. We got up there and met some friends of Robb. They had a power auger and a snowmobile and some nice stuff.

They were also the experts on how to fish at Lost Creek. We had planned on just borrowing the auger, but they were very nice and invited us into their group. It was a great time. They even fed us lunch!

I managed to catch 6 cutthroat trout. Two of them were really small, so I let them go. One jumped off the hook just as I got it to the surface. The other three are in the oven right now. One 10 incher, one 14 incher,

and one whopping 19-inch fish. That one was really cool to catch. It's the biggest one that the group had seen pulled out of Lost Creek.

I take no credit for it. Ice fishing is all about the bait and luck. There's no man-versus-fish, you just drop in the bait and wait. I was just lucky to get such an enormous fish.

I don't have a normal fishing rod, just a fly-rod, so I borrowed Moab's Spiderman pole. Worked like a charm, but I thought I was going to lose the big fish a few times.

I'm exhausted, but had a great day. I think after some fish fillets and nice hot shower I'll hop into bed...mmmm....
