Hearing someone disapprove of socks and sandals, or wearing pyjamas outdoors may be the fastest way to identify an idiot. I can understand a bit of doing-the-done-thing, but the additional step, of trying to construct arguments about how natural, correct, and necessary the thing is - this seals the guarantee that someone has nothing but other people's thoughts lodged in their head.
