Well, this is my first gemlog post... thing. I suppose here I'll quickly go over why I made a Gemini capsule and also what I intend to do with it. Er... unfortunate timing, date-wise.
Originally it was out of pure curiosity, considering I didn't know how hard self-hosting a Gemini server would be, but turns out it's dead easy if you only want to serve static pages, like I am. I guess I also kinda want to set up shop here in case anyone else pops up too, because I think it's a pretty neat experience, though not everyone will like it, which is understandable.
It's my own little self hosted site. Or, as it's called here, a Capsule. nginx is the bane of my existence and it's busy hosting Mastodon... and I really don't want to learn how to host multiple HTTP sites right now. Also, I'm shite at CSS so it would look substantially worse than a Gemini capsule.
Basically, it's my home base on Gemini, and of course where I ramble on and on and on about things like this in the form of gemlog posts! I kinda prefer this to something like WriteFreely becuase really all I need is a damn text editor, no fancy crap - writing a gmi file in nano is great. That, and Gemini servers are so lightweight (depending on the one you use, I guess) that I don't have to really worry about increased power consumption from the server it runs on.
The server is an Intel NUC 10 (specifically model NUC10i7FNK) with a Core i7-10710U and 16GB of RAM, running Ubuntu Server 20.04 LTS. Overkill for even the Mastodon / Glitch-soc server I also run, but really small, quiet and low power-hungriness. For Gemini, I run Agate through a systemd service so it autostarts on boot. Very simple and a breeze to set up. The most annoying part was honestly the systemd service!
Definitely one of my most favourite computers of all time.
Nice to be here. Yes I'm on Fedi too, you can find my link on the landing page.
I've seen some people take a pretty negative stance towards ActivityPub and the Fediverse in general... which kinda sucks - so if you ARE one of those people and you're reading this, please don't bash and batter me for having a presence there, thanks. I chose to be there.
That's all for now.
