I am not a "grammar nazi". I don't really care if someone messes up "their", "there", or "they're". The same thing goes for "paid" and "payed" (payed is a nautical term for when you let out rope). But the thing that really grinds my gears is the phrase "all but". I am perfectly aware that the term has the official definition meaning "very nearly". Synonyms of all and but are "everything" and "except" respectively. I have seen the term "all but" used in both the context of nearly and except. Apparently the phrase is actually an idiom, but that is not clear at all because we can also use "Grab all boxes but that one.". It's not a clear idiom like "It's raining cats and dogs", and the two words can be used in conjunction to describe an exception.
I hate english.
