Just as the earlier "Blondie Plays Cupid" wasn't the Valentine's Day one, but the Fourth of July one, this one isn't the St. Patrick's Day one, but the... uh... Veterans Day one, I guess?

Dagwood gets to be boss for a day, gets invited to something involving lots of cigar smoking by the mayor (who had earlier made it clear that he doesn't smoke), and ends up hiring a woman sergeant, Betty Jane, as an architect. Mr. Dithers is unhappy about this, but Blondie sticks up for him and gets him and Betty Jane fired. Blondie decides they should start their own construction business (because it's just that easy!) and go after a contract Mr. Dithers was also trying to get. They mistake the layabout son of a theater owner for the owner himself and blow all their money taking him out to try to get the contract. In order to get it from the real theater owner, Dagwood has to disguise himself as a masseur, complete with unconvincing accent and unconvincing muscles, and sneak into his office to show him the plans for the theater. The police get involved, because of course they do, the Bumstead construction company folds because he doesn't have enough money to pay the bond, and he goes back to working for Mr. Dithers, but not before Blondie argues with him about the bonus and raise Dagwood should get.

Dagwood doesn't punch anyone in this one, but he does knock out three people by accident by hitting their pressure points. For the first time in the series, Dagwood and Blondie's relationship isn't in danger of ending in divorce at all, as Betty Jane ends up in a romantic relationship with the layabout son, and not as competition for Blondie. The kids and Daisy are hardly in this one, which is also a shame.
