Finally indeed! The move took a long time, with a lot of back and forth trips… A few very short nights and a lot of stuff to put in boxes and then put them in their new place. Nothing unusual for a move like this. I had to be back to Paris after the move of all the furnitures (except a convertible couch, a fridge and a microwave…) for a few days for family reasons… That was hard to be in an almost empty apartment but now I'm finally home in Toulouse. Even though we started renting the new apartment earlier in March, I can finally call it home since only a couple of days.
For the first time in a month, my desk setup is fully back as before, with all my screens and my mechanical keyboard (even though the frame.work laptop keyboard is a great nice replacement on the move!). My mouse (an old Razer chroma) died during my last trip back to Paris so I decided to try a cheap (±15€) vertical mouse. They are supposed to be more ergonomic and better for the wrist. I don't know if that's true but so far I like the grip and the feeling, so I'm not regretting my choice so far.
I managed to aligned the delivery of my furniture the same day as the setup of my internet connection, so that was a good optimization! I have now a better and more stable (it seems so far at least) internet connection than I had in Paris. It means I should be able to selfhost again here :). It is great, but it means it is time for planning… Right now, all my internet available services are hosted on some digital ocean droplets. I intend to retrieve most of them (except my email server, as usual as I don't want to host it at home).
Thanks to using my own router (Netgear Orbi RBR50) with one satellite to extend the wifi everywhere correctly, I almost had nothing to do for all the devices from the previous apartment to be online again if I wanted. All I needed to do was to connect the ISP internet box to my router via Ethernet connection and all my devices could connect to the "old" wifi without any new config. Then I disabled the ISP box wifi (that doesn't cover the full apartment correctly anyway) :).
My NAS is the only thing I installed so far, to make sure my laptop is daily backed up just in case. I have many things to reinstall. Some easy like my raspberrypi with kodi (mediacenter), but other I'm in a middle of an argument with myself… I have many Raspberry Pis already, so I don't want to invest in "server hardware".
The options I have in mind are:
For now, I'm more inclined towards the 3rd option. Removing complexity (no swarm/kubernetes), still relying on docker for simplicity (and reuse) and adding new cool stuff like better monitoring and log management… But the final decision will be later as this week will be very busy with <dayjob>… I am in no rush though, so I intend to take the time to do all this and take notes in parallel to publish some article on my blog, the same way I did for the setup of my frame.work laptop (I have a few articles to finish on that front too).
In any case, it's good to be settled correctly again, and having the ability to write some articles here and there for both my gemlog and blog.
