This week — Going Through My Blog Task List

TL;DR: I had another long weekend, so I drafted up some pages that I've been wanting to create. I also decided to scrap some past plans for this blog.

Work has been busy as usual: I juggled different tasks during the workweek, but thankfully none were urgent. Unfortunately, we experienced rough weather here in the city, which culminated in Friday work being suspended thanks to the developing typhoon. Thus, I had another long weekend.

Hence, I took the opportunity to work more on my blog, and cross off some tasks that I wanted to accomplish.

Blog Updates

New Pages

First, I woke up one day and decided that I wanted an /adoptables page for virtual pets and adoptable art. So I made one. So far, I only have my virtual pets from Wobble Town and TamaNOTchi World on the page, but I plan to go exploring and add more stuff in the future!

Second, I finally sat down and wrote out my web manifesto. I used some of the questions from a MelonLand Forum thread to guide me on writing it... and to my surprise, it became one of the most poetic things I've ever made. Huh, I didn't think I still had it in me to be poetic.

Third, I published the second version of my Uses page. Compared to the first one, it's more concise and less lengthy.

Other Blog Things

I decided to create a sitemap so people, and robots, can search this blog easier. (Yes, I know I can just add a search bar, but that involves JavaScript, which is a no-no for me.) So I researched online about sitemaps, then used a sitemap generator to create the file.

Since weblog.lol doesn't automatically generate the sitemap in the first place, I have to update the file by hand. Also, I haven't figured out how to style it, so for now it's not human-readable. Even so, I'm happy that I succeeded in making the sitemap!

I also attempted to implement a web app manifest for this blog, inspired by @anniegreens' recent blog post on her own implementation. However, I forgot that custom favicons on omg.lol aren't a thing yet. I could do what Annie did and use a CDN like bunny.net to serve the favicons, but A) I've never used a CDN before, and B) it feels like overkill just for this purpose. So for now, the plan to have a web app manifest for this blog is scrapped.

Also I found out on my own that the actual Gemini mirror of my blog doesn't seem to work. If anyone else has this problem, you can access the non-custom domain link instead.

Scrapped ideas

After failing to find a webmention implementation appropriate for my technical skill level, I decided to just do what Simone does for his website and not have comments at all. If you want to comment on any of my blog posts, you're free to ping me on Mastodon, or participate in this blog's mailing list.

In addition, while I initially wanted to write up a personal user manual, as inspired by @andycarolan's own, I researched more about user manuals and realized that something work-oriented wasn't appropriate for this personal blog.

Future Plans?

I want to restart the notes section of this blog, so I can share my software and videogame mod setups. But first I'll have to clean up my notes in Standard Notes so they're more presentable.

(Side note: speaking of Standard Notes, I have to respect that they once published a blog post saying:

You aren't less productive because you haven't applied the latest knowledge management techniques to your notes.

For someone who never got the hang of personal knowledge management systems, that's validating.)

Miscellaneous

@robb recently started a fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. @adam, on behalf of omg.lol, is supporting the campaign by donating 50% of omg.lol's earnings throughout September. If you have some spare cash, please donate as well!

Also, I keep forgetting to mention this, but 32-Bit Cafe had its 2nd code jam weeks ago, and it recently ended. Once again, I wasn't able to participate, because... I was working on my task list for this blog. Welp.

Well, that's all for now. See you again next week!
