This whole page is dedicated to explaining a little about who I am and why I have made this capsule. I try to go into more detail here about the goals for this capsule than 'just for me to blog.' Hopefully this is a proper introduction to me and this little slice of the Geminispace.
Definitely a good question, but quite simple to answer - just a guy who likes computers and terminal based stuff. I also very much enjoy playing survival games and am addicted to the FOSS game 0 A.D. I have built websites for people and businesses, repaired dozens of machines, and worked freelance on a handful of games. Nothing crazy, but I've stayed busy and like trying new things.
I am what I like to call a practical minimalist, which means I want things to be minimal while recognizing that for a lot of what I do (content creation) I need some pretty beefy software. It's hard to argue that any Video Editor is minimal unless you go the pure ffmpeg route and as someone who's tried that - I will stick with the 'bloated' option. 😅
So while I do use larger programs for some tasks I mostly want small terminal based solutions. That is where my interest in the Gemini protocol comes in. I was interested in it back around 2020-21; however, like most of us (HexDSL, Chris Were, etc) I just lost interest. Not really in the protocol or the experience of browsing the wonderful world of gemini capsules.
I think most of us did lose interest as a result of the critical resources that we need just not being a thing here. For example, a lot of really useful wiki resources only exist on the web.
Let's cover the super simple aspect first. The foundation of the capsule is a journal where I will discuss the progress of what I am working on as well as opinion pieces. So you'll always be able to find something to read about if it's been a minute since you've stopped by.
Now for the meat and potatoes, I am interested in making this capsule a great jumping off point for those interested in Gemini. I am interested in converting smaller web resources or parts of larger ones such as Gentoo AMD64 Handbook so that many of the resources that one may be looking for can be found here in a clean and organized way. Luckily enough there's some tools for autimagically converting HTML to GMI. So hopefully, in most cases, I won't need to bend over backwards to get more and more content available.
A big part of this project will be getting support from you guys in creating valuable capsules! As well as going out there and finding more wonderful gems to share! Please reach out to me if you have anything informative that you want to see here. The relevant information to contact me can be found at the bottom of the home page.
Thank you for taking the time to read this page!
