Circumlunar Space maintains a list of Gemini software, including servers, at the following URL:
gemini://gemini.circumlunar.space/software/
It's useful, but as it notes, it is not curated. So, when I was looking at potentially switching servers recently, I had 25 options with only a short blurb to describe them. I quickly found that some of them whose names I recognized were no longer maintained. So, I thought, it would be nice to have a list of which ones are maintained.
I have made such a list, sorted, and uploaded it here:
This includes the name, last updated date, language, and a link.
Prefer a short summary here? Nine browsers have been updated in the past month, as of May 1, 2022, with a one-day grace period, sorted by update date, most recent first:
An additional four have been updated in in the past 3 months:
One additional server has been updated in the past 6 months:
Six additional browsers have been updated in the past year:
The following servers have not been updated in more than a year:
Obviously, update date alone is not a reason to pick software, and a server that hasn't been updated may be quite stable, while one that has been updated might be quite new and not feature-complete. Still, it can be a rough indicator in a search for a server; if nothing else, clients must have been updated since a Gemini spec was published in order to fully support it.
I also found it interesting to see that a decent amount of Gemini servers continue to be updated. Of the 25 listed on Circumlunar Space, 9 have been updated in the past month, and 13 in the past quarter, and 20 in the past year. There are a wealth of options to choose from.
This list may be updated in the future, but that should not be counted on. If someone else would like to update it and repost it, or do a more detailed comparison (e.g. which servers support which Gemini specs, or which use which TLS libraries), feel free to build upon this data, although I'd appreciate an e-mail at gemini@ajtjp.com so I can learn about and view the updated list as well.
