plugging a 1tb external 2.5" HDD into an rpi3 can lead to interesting issues. sometimes it just shuts itself off, goes to sleep. but only when monitor and keyboard are attached to the pi. presumably the power supply isn't enough 🤣

FWIW: I've had no problems with SSDs on Raspberry Pi (4b); but I've always taken care to get ones with external power supplies when it comes to mechanical disks as they do draw quite a bit more juice. · 2 years ago

I have an SSD plugged into a PI4 without external power. Into the same PI, I have a 3.5 inch spinning disk with its own power supply. The PI4 requires a beefier power supply which might be making the difference if your HD is also an SSD (non-spinning disk). · 2 years ago

I have a PI 2 connected to 3.5 HD with its own ac. The PIs in general cannot supply power to external disks. · 2 years ago
