so excited, I turn 18 in like 3 hours, I know it may seem small but for me it's a big milestone. And I want to say thank all of you for the entertaining logs and site links that kept me occupied for such a long time and distracted me from what was bothering me, and now that I will be an adult, I can actually address my problems and get my life together. Thanks again all, and thanks @marting for making this place, it's brought me a lot of enjoyment
So... Didn't know that you are able to format a USB stick with android. Found this out when I needed to do so after linux mint wouldn't install any wifi drivers for some reason. Now downgrading to win11
so... Tried some gemini browsers on linux and no luck. I think that this is a kind of... Me problem if you will but don't know.
None of them seem to be that friendly in turns of accessibility. The terminal ones read a lot of ascii characters with seemingly no way of turning them of and the graphical ones just don't seem to read with screen readers.
Its understandable though because not a lot of users are visually impaired.
so hereโs my question. How hard would it be for someone to create a Gemini web browser? I know a fair bit about programming so if thatโs a criteria I think I have met it
iโm thinking of getting a coffee machine with Internet connectivity when I move out and making a command line Linux application to control it
Have any of you done something cool like that before? It doesnโt have to relate to coffee machines but doing something with your computer on the command line and accessing a different machine on your network or building a cool project sort of like this.
Installed linux mint last week and love the heck out of it. I actually love the command-line more than desktop environments and the fact that you are able to install pretty much anything you may need from a terminal is the best thing in the world.
I know this doesn't belong here most likely but I'm going to post it anyways.
It's sad that in today's tech era, a person with a visual impairment isn't able to install another OS completely on their own. The boot menu, (the thing you need to access in order to boot from an external drive) is yet to become accessible enough for a blind person to use.
I know that the boot menu/bios need to remain as stripped down as they can, but if that's the case, shouldn't there be a way to boot from USB directly from your OS of choice?
Its been a while since I've posted here. How is everyone?
hello fellow minded tech people, I have another question for you (I know how annoying this is getting lol) but I donโt know who else or what else to ask.
letโs say I had a device that was running a modified version of windows CE 5.0 or something like that and I wanted to get itโs processor and RAM information. Would there be any way of doing this? also note that there is no such application on the device to view the information that Iโm looking for.
@marginalia what resources did you use to gather knowledge about building a search engine? I'm curious because I may try the same one day.
is there anyone here who has a fascination with retro technology like I do? Iโm talking about things like the first game consuls and really old computers. I donโt know, it seemed like the 90s and 80s were more futuristic in my opinion
do any of you know of free resources for learning more about math/computer science concepts? I've tried youtube but I can't seem to focus on what they're saying so I'm looking for any good text based materials
this may be a strange question to ask here but I feel like we all mostly think alike so I want to ask you people. Have you ever had days where you felt upset by something or just bored with your current assignment/project? if so, how do you force your way through it?
I'm going to sound crazy but I want to make a mobile operating system from scratch. I know how that may sound with my lack of knowledge for that kind of task but I'm still going to try. I mean, if a friend of mine could do it six years after he started his programming journey, why couldn't I?
nothing better than having a quiet night and doing nothing at all, what are you people up to?
I feel lame for some reason. I see everybody here on Gemini doing really big things and the only thing Iโve done that is my biggest project is a discord bot
are there any intermediate coding projects I can do that would be fun? Iโm sick of making guess the number games and chat bots
I found a critical bug in station. People are too nice and this place is addicting to browse. have a good week everyone.
Language learners, I need advice.
I've learned enough Russian for people to slightly understand me, but my vocabulary is lacking. So what should I do, should I focus more on grammer or increase my vocabulary for a while?
anyone else here have a love of cyphers? They just seem interesting to me, kind of a use with friends to keep secrets kind of thing, they of-course have their technological uses at least I think, but don't know. I love cryptography
@marting another suggestion, is there a way to have a link under the actions heading that gives you a list of all the logs you've created? I'm trying to find a log I wrote a while back but I can't
how is everyone? any cool things going on?
is the universe just a hologram? you know, the regular questions
curious question to all you developers out there. What are your opinions on accessibility? lets say you were designing a website or mobile application, would you think about accessibility or no
have you ever been baยขk to a coding project you wrote in the beginning of your programming Journey and all your variables were named something like "x1" "some_thing," you never used functions etc? that happened to me today and I was both amazed that I actually knew what I needed to do in order to write cleaner code and embarrassed about how bad I was at the start
so I've been thinking about something. We have the web which has things like google, facebook, reddit, and so on. We also have gemini, which has station and other simple sites. Why don't we have a protocol for apps. Think of the web or gemini but used only for applications. We'd have automatic cross platform support for basically native like apps, file system access to a certain extent, and a place to post your apps and not have them taken down because your app doesn't meet the requirements of the apple or google stores
I don't know if any of you besides @martin love learning languages but let me tell you, you really feel proud when you can understand more than you used to. A first for me because I used to switch from languish to language due to lack of structure and in some cases lack of resources as well.
good day all. Nothing's better than watching movies in bed while eating popcorn and browsing different places on the net. What's everyone up to?
Anyone here have experience in Linux? If so what is your favorite distribution? Just curious
why do cases have to be so difficult to understand? currently attempting to understand Russian cases and adjective conjugation and it's not making sense
baking is fun. What's your favorite baked item weather it be something you made or bought?
put your music recommendations here. I'm bored and I'd listen to just about anything... Accept modern rap. Sorry
this week has been interesting. I memorize the Russian alphabet as well as Russian numbers from 1 to 100. Now comes the hard part
ะฟัะธะฒะตั hello
happy Friday all. about to go get my first vaccine dose and pretty excited about that. What are you all doing today? Also on a totally unrelated note, any tutorials for setting up a Gemini capsule?
@martin I have a suggestion. Is there a way for you to add a link in each log to return you to the main feed?
I just thought Iโd give a big thanks to @martin for making this network
good morning/afternoon/evening to all
anyone here into horror?
its amazing that in eight months hi school will be a thing of the past and I will have a new chapter of my life to explore. Itโs amazing to also think how quickly time passes sometimes
Anyone want to be blasted into the vacuum of space?
hello. How are you people doing? This network seems amazing and I am proud to be a member
