This is a gemlog for the SpellBinding puzzle, in which you construct words using the specified letters (each word must contain the anchor letter).

Play SpellBinding

2021-11-29 solution: AFFLUENCE (C is the anchor):

ACNE AFFLUENCE CAFE CALF CALL CANAL CANCAN CANCEL CANE CANNEL CANNULA CELL CLAN CLEAN CLEF CLUE CUFF CULL EFFACE ENLACE FACE FECAL FENCE FLEECE LACE LACUNA LANCE NUANCE UNCLE UNCLEAN UNLACE

Congratulations, Gnuserland, Beto Dealmeida, moddedBear, skyjake and gluon.

This was a bigger puzzle than the previous ones. I had a couple of painful periods when I could not think of a word, but then a bunch would come.

Some interesting words

CANNEL is a curiosity: it is a 'compact coal' for burning, along with a couple of other archaic meanings: a gutter in the road, and cinnamon.

CANULA is a medical tube that is inserted into a body cavity. I did not know the word until a family member got an oxygen machine and now I have to replace nose canulas often.

FECAL - well haha. And no, FECE is not a word (but FECES is)... Unfortunately FECULENCE should have been there but was missing. Sorry! I feel especially bad about missing the toilet humor words. Also FECULA is missing; this is a kind of starch made from arrowroot and other plants - and has nothing to do with feces.

LACUNA is a good one to know: a deficiency or a gap (in a story or an argument).

Missing words

The dictionary is tricky: it is a fine balance between being too bing (no one wants to solve a puzzle with 300 words) or missing some basic words that really should be there. The puzzle-solvers aleted me to several missing words, in addition to FECULENCE:

LACUNE - another form of LACUNA

LACUNAL - related to LACUNA

EFFLUENCE - outflow

CANFUL - doi...

NUCLEAL - another form of nuclear

CAUL - a membrane

CANUN - a zither

CLEE - clay, a British dialect, too obscure

CUECA - a South American courtship dance, too obscure
