Life's Too Short is a small adventure game about a ghost in a mansion trying to get a married vampire couple to communicate again. It's the first game by developer Ollie Coe, and like a lot of Playdate games in these early days since release, was made as a project to learn Playdate development--specifically in Playdate's more beginner friendly Pulp environment.
The game is more or less an old school point and click adventure, though obviously with less pointing and clicking. Your ghost protagonist has to search the house for items that will be used in the appropriate places to solve puzzles to acquire other items, open doors, etc. Seasoned adventure game fans will breeze through this pretty quickly, though it would make a great introduction to someone unfamiliar with this type of gameplay. It's not so simple that everything is obvious and you won't enjoy yourself, but if you've played a lot of adventure games you'll figure things out pretty quickly I think.
Because this is a Pulp game, the sprite sizes are very small, but Ollie Coe has done a lot of charming detail with the limited sizes. The characters have a lot of personality for being so small on the screen. The writing is extremely charming, there's a lot of flavor here for as little dialogue as there is.
I'd wager the average time to complete this game will be about 30 minutes, but I'm not sure if it could be longer for those who aren't used to adventure game shenanigans. The game has no save feature (the developer very honestly says this is because they "can't figure it out yet"), but if you don't complete the game in one sitting it wouldn't be too hard to retrace your steps to get back to where you were. It's a charming and cute game, and if you're looking for things to play on your brand new Playdate it's worth the $1 purchase price.
