As an average height woman, I should be taller than the bonnet of any consumer automobile. The fact that I have to regularly cross streets in front of pickup trucks that stopped halfway into the crosswalk and I'm completely hidden by the hood of the car is severely screwed up and dangerous
At least semi trucks and delivery vehicles move the cab further up front to increase visibility. It's like modern consumer vehicles are designed to decrease driver visibility

It's a shame they don't make them like they used to. Love my 1989 Toyota. ๐ป

Have you seen this video from NotJustBikes? It's shocking how these things are not only allowed to exist, but are everywhere. Sorry for the https link btw.

Dangerous and irresponsible and invariably spotless, those things scream "compensating".
@Ruby_Witch That video is crazy. And the trucks in that video aren't even the REALLY big ones I've seen. For comparison, this is what it looks like when I park my truck beside one of those behemoths (attached).
These tall trucks need front facing camera

they keep making pickup trucks bigger and bigger. i find owning a pickup truck very fun, but the only way i was able to get one at a reasonable size was buying one that was over 10 years old. which is fine but telling!
I've heard that the size is sometimes sold as a safety feature, because for example if you get in an accident while driving a new ford f150, you will be fine. but it's only because you're endangering others instead! and i think that says a lot about how some people think
of course i want my car to be safe. but for me AND for others on the road and sidewalk, not just for me!

@starling Yep! That's why I got an '89 Toyota. For the last decade or so it's been impossible to find a regular cab, short bed pickup. It looks as though Chevy and GM are now making them again - but they're still... chonky and tall. At least they're getting a little smaller. It's kind of like the iPhone and how they kept getting bigger and bigger - but now finally have the Mini (which I also own lol). Everything is super-sized these days.
Came across this YouTube video, and it reminded me of this post. He goes into "why we can't have small trucks anymore" - apparently it's because of the EPA.
Video description:
Ever wonder why we don't have any small, rugged trucks in the US anymore? Remember fondly those 80s Toyota trucks, the Ranger, the S-10, Isuzu, Mitsubishi, or Nissan Hardbodies?
It's not just consumer demand or companies driving for higher profits. Our EPA sets fuel economy standards that prohibit small trucks from meeting mileage requirements, as well as incentivizing larger trucks and SUVs with lower MPG requirements.
