Slacking on Weight Loss

2022-05-22

---

I've gained five pounds in the last three weeks. While I'm not going to make excuses for my lack of discipline, each week had a different set of circumstances that I used as reasons to stay on the couch.

Three weeks ago, my wife went on a trip out of town. I mainly spent that week eating lots of junk food and lounging around the house--in other words, I decided entirely of my own volition not to exercise or watch my diet. That week, unsurprisingly, I gained three pounds.

I knew I needed to exercise more the next week, which I primarily planned to do by cycling and walking around some of the many local parks. Instead, it rained five out of the seven days that week, so I stayed inside and tried to compensate by eating light. My weight was somewhat stable that week.

The skies cleared last week, and I intended to resume my weight loss by exercising as usual. On Monday night, I contracted a respiratory infection (not COVID, fortunately), which continues to affect my throat and sinuses six days later. As a result, I couldn't breathe well enough to engage in serious exercise, and I spent most days lying in bed or sitting in my living room. I gained two pounds last week.

At the beginning of May, I was 7 pounds away from weighing in at 200, and I felt confident I could do it by the end of the month. We now have one week left in May, and I've set myself back five pounds. Now I'll be lucky to hit 200 by the end of June. I really need to stop this self-sabotage.
