Nothing changed yesterday, I didn't bother writing about the caterpillars and I didn't go and check on the Orb spider. Today's the penultimate day of my COVID isolation, so hopefully only a few more trivial spottings around the garden.
My daily bike ride reduced to a session on the trainer; some days I've gone for a distance, other days for a time — today was a longer session, sit it out for an hour and watch the world go by while listening to a podcast. I set the trainer up in the shade near the vegetable garden and can see people ride past on the bike path over the fence, and watch the insects fly in and around on the tomato and zucchini plants.
Today's first, slightly startling individual, was the large cockroach that shot out from under my cycling gloves as I picked them up to put them on. The Shining cockroach[1] has an absolutely amazing name, looks fairly striking, but they're guaranteed to startle anyone as they shoot out from underneath whatever they've been hiding. I gave the gloves a good shake to make sure there weren't any others, then hopped on the bike. Little known to me it had taken refuge inside my folded up keys, so an hour later as I finished up and grabbed them to go back inside I had to shake it out again!
Not so well received was the sight of a few too many European wasps[2] continually flying into the garden to the tomato plants, and digging in the soil in some of the pots of spring bulbs. I'm not that fond of any wasps, and have a near-phobia about these ones. I think it may be time to hunt around on the weekend and see if there's a nest nearby
