2021/1121/1600 — river birds

My Sunday afternoon longer bike ride took me out to the south-east this afternoon, along the Djerring trail to the Eastern freeway, then south along the parallel path all the way to the bay alongside Dandenong creek and the Patterson river. Sadly full of plastic bottles and rubbish for much of its length, lower down the creek and surrounds is always full of birds. The strong southerly blowing in my face was a minor blessing as it let me look at the nearby White ibis[1] rookery without being able to smell them. Then down in the river there seemed to be the full collection of cormorants; black and pied, small and large, although this time I didn't see any darters. A pair of Black swans feeding nearby at the edge of the river, and a solitary pelican[3] paddling around — unusual, I normal see them in pairs of groups. Another odd solitary sighting was a Straw-necked ibis on the boundary of one of the settling ponds, again I usually see them in small groups, and last Saturday saw dozens of them out in Gippsland, but probably forgot to write about them — so much more attractive than the White ibis! Definitely not solitary was the huge flock of Silver gulls[5] on the grass, all standing low to the ground and facing into the wind, making the grassy riverbank look like it had been carpeted with scattered white.
