Almost at a loss of where to go for my ride today as we're still under lockdown and the weather is cold and grey. Was feeling uninterested in my usual loop of parks, creek and bike tracks and had the idea to take the fixie around to Packer Park and have a spin around the velodrome. It was different enough to be interesting, and lead to today's happy observations.
The velodrome is outdoors in Packer Park, with the centre filled with grass that is in a fairly unkempt state at the moment. Four Welcome swallows[1] were swooping endlessly around as I did my laps, high-pitched chirps between them. Anywhere from 10cm above the grass as they chased insects, to a whirl around 4 or 5 metres in the air. Also heard but not seen were the Pied currawongs[2] warbling in the trees nearby. On leaving the park through the more bush-filled woodlands of Mallanbool Park I could see and hear the rainbow lorikeets[3] & wattlebirds[4] calling & flying past.
The vegetation in Mallanbool Park gave me an idea so I detoured on the way home up to Boyd Park to look for the denizens from the weekend — sure enough, there they were, three Tawny frogmouths[5] lurking like lumps on a log up in the gum tree above the scout hall. One last check on the orchids and off home
