Fairly standard afternoon loop ride of mine; up along the Anniversary trail then down the Ferndale track to Gardiners creek and upstream first to the Glen Iris wetlands and then later back to East Malvern and turn off for home. There's always a pause at the wetlands, sometimes short, sometimes long, today I spent a little more time there and took a little more notice of what was around.
As I was first riding along the creek I watched a White-faced heron[1] stalking along beside the bike track and wondered if it was one of the ones from the nest I'd been seeing, then got to the first pond of the wetlands and stopped on the boardwalk-jetty for a first look around. Thinking it was the same place I'd been when I saw the turtle a couple of weeks ago I scanned the water and there it was[2] again drifting along slowly and coming up for air. Lots of blackbirds[3] making a noise singing in the scrub and a few doves[4] flying back and forth.
After watching for a while I rode around to the bird hide at the second pond but never really see much here, then further around the pond and over it on the boardwalk -- black duck[5] and ducklings in the water, wattlebird[6] and currawongs[7] calling in the trees overhead. Moorhens[8] and another White-faced heron stalking on the mudflats
Completing a circuit back to the start I checked the heron nest but they've fledged -- perhaps the two I've seen were from there -- then turn for home along the creek and up through the park. Peewee[9] and magpies[10] pecking around on the grassy sports ovals and a noisy group of Coots[11] and chicks
