The forecast was for a high of 32°C, and I had some work scheduled from 3pm-11pm, so I headed out for my daily ride after lunch, hoping to beat the worst of the heat. Unfortunately the forecast maximum is what will be measured in a sheltered measuring box, out on the road away from shade and with reflected heat from concrete, tar and brick it was up to 37°C, and down to a blissfull 26°C in the underpass under the freeway. West to Caulfield and around through the 'burbs, then back along the creek, plenty of birdlife, but mostly resting with wings and beaks half open to "pant" as birds do. Passing over one of the bridges on Gardiners creek three or four large fat European carp[1] swam slowly about in the shallows, with schools of small fish -- probably gambusia[2] -- flicking around at the edges. At the Glen Iris wetlands there are Willy wagtails[3] everywhere, there must have been more fledglings than just the nest I'd seen. Magpie[4], mudlark[5], pied currawongs[6] looking out of place in the heat since I associate them with mountains and the cold, Little ravens[7] resting in the shade, and as always, Noisy miners[8] and Red wattlebirds[9] bossing everything else around
